CSR INTRODUCTION

 Defining CSR
“The continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce, and their families, as well as of the local community and society at large.” (World Business Council for Sustainable Development, 2000)
Operating a business in a manner that meets or exceeds the ethical, legal, commercial and public expectations that society has of business”. (Business for Social Responsibility, 1998)

 What is CSR
• Maximize company’s overall impact on the society and stakeholders.
• More than a collection of discrete practices or occasional gestures, or
initiatives motivated by marketing, public relations or other business benefits.
CSR  approaches and attitudes differ largely due
         – to social and economic systems
         – legal and regulatory frameworks,
         – cultural practices,
         – local societal and public needs and expectations.

CSR
“A business that does not show a profit at least equal to its cost of capital is irresponsible; it wastes society’s resources. Economic profit performance is the base without which business cannot discharge any other function, cannot be a good employer, a good citizen, a good neighbour. But economic performance is not the only responsibility of a business…Every organization must assume responsibility for its impact on employees, the environment, customers, and whomever and whatever it touches. That is social
    responsibility.”
Values
Values are the rules by which we make decisions about right and wrong, should and shouldn't, good and bad. They also tell us which are more or less important, which is useful when we have to trade off meeting one value over another.
  Dictionary.com defines values as:
n : beliefs of a person or social group in which they have an emotional investment (either for or against something); "he has very conservatives values"
  Value
Values are beliefs. But they are beliefs tied inextricably to emotion, not objective, cold ideas.
Values are a motivational construct. They refer to the desirable goals people strive to attain.
Values transcend specific actions and situations. They are abstract goals. The abstract nature of values distinguishes them from concepts like norms and attitudes, which usually refer to specific actions, objects, or situations.
Values guide the selection or evaluation of actions, policies, people, and events. That is, values serves as standards or criteria
Values are ordered by importance relative to one another. People’s values form an ordered system of value priorities that characterize them as individuals. This hierarchical feature of values also distinguishes them from norms and attitudes.

Morals
Morals have a greater social element to values and tend to have a very broad acceptance. Morals are far more about good and bad than other values. We thus judge others more strongly on morals than values. A person can be described as immoral, yet there is no word for them not following values.
  Dictionary.com defines morals as:
n : motivation based on ideas of right and wrong

Ethics

Dictionary.com defines ethics as:        A theory or a system of moral values
Ethics tend to be codified into a formal system or set of rules which are explicitly adopted by a group of people. So you have Medical Ethics, Professional Ethics of Auditors etc.
  Value
A value is a view of life and judgment of what is desirable
It is part of a person’s personality.
Ex. Benign attitude to labor welfare is a value which may prompt an industrialist to do much more for workers than what the labor law stipulates. We have seen its culmination in the value system that guided JRD Tata to create the toewnship Tata Nagar for its employees with housing, hospital, parks, water, electricity  and guarantee of one job for next generation of the worker !
  Values- individual vs organizational values
Values are the embodiment of what an organization stands for, and should be the basis for the behavior of its members. However, what if members of the organization do not share and have not internalized the organization's values? Obviously, a disconnect between individual and organizational values will be dysfunctional.
  Values- stated vs operating values
Additionally, an organization may publish one set of values, perhaps in an effort to push forward a positive image, while the values that really guide organizational behavior are very different. When there is a disconnect between stated and operating values, it may be difficult to determine what is "acceptable." For example, two of the Army's organizational values include candor and courage. One might infer that officers are encouraged to "have the courage of their convictions" and speak their disagreements openly. In some cases, this does work; in others it does not.
Ten motivationally distinct, broad and basic values are derived from three universal requirements of the human condition:
needs of individuals as biological organisms,
requisites of coordinated social interaction, and
survival and welfare needs of groups.

Ten Types of Values

1. Self-Direction. Independent thought and action; choosing, creating, exploring.
2. Stimulation. Excitement, novelty, and challenge in life.
3. Hedonism. Pleasure and sensuous gratification for oneself.
4. Achievement. Personal success through demonstrating competence according to
     social standards.
5. Power. Social status and prestige, control or dominance over people and resources.
6. Security. Safety, harmony, and stability of society, of relationships, and of self.
7. Conformity. Restraint of actions, inclinations, and impulses likely to upset or harm others and violate social expectations or norms.
8. Benevolence. Preserving and enhancing the welfare of those with whom one is in
  frequent personal contact (the ‘in-group’)
9. Tradition. Respect, commitment, and acceptance of the customs and ideas that
traditional culture or religion provide the self
10. Universalism. Understanding, appreciation, tolerance, and protection for the welfare of all people and for nature.

A pattern of relations of conflict and
congruity among values
  An Example
The pursuit of achievement values may conflict with the pursuit of benevolence values - seeking success for self is likely to obstruct actions aimed at enhancing the welfare of others who need one's help. However, the pursuit of achievement values may be compatible with the pursuit of power values - seeking personal success for oneself is likely to strengthen and to be strengthened by actions aimed at enhancing one's own social position and authority over others.
Formation of Values
Personal Values are imbibed from Parents, Teachers and Elders
As individuals grow, values are adapted and refined in the wake of new knowledge and experiences.
Within an organization Values are imparted by founder-enterpreneur  or a dominant CEO , and they remain in some form , even long after the person’s exit.
  Ex. Formation of Values
What forges Tata group companies together ?
  J.R.D. Tata
I would call it a group of individually managed companies united by two factors :
Part of larger group that carries name and prestige of TATAs and public recognition of  honesty and reliability- Trustworthiness
Another reason is  metaphysical – There is an inate loyalty , a sharing of certain belief, a pride in the fact that we are somewhat different from the other.
Jamshedji Tata

Value and Ethics
Business ethics operate as a system of values relating business goals and techniques to meet specific human need.
A major task of leadership is to inculcate personal values and a sense of  business ethics to the organizational members.
At one end values and ethics shape the corporate culture and dictate ways how politics and power will be used and at the other end clarify the social responsibility in the organization

CSR Paradox !
in order to maintain a socially responsible business model, companiesshould act a manner that will benefit society. Conversely, in order to benefit society, companies should act in a manner that benefittedthemselves.
Theories
Social Contract (Donaldson, 1982; Donaldson and Dunfee, 1999) – There is a tacit social contract between the firm and society; the contract bestows certain rights in exchange for certain responsibilities.
Stakeholder Theory (Freeman, 1984) – Argues that it is in the company’s strategic interest to respect the interests of all its stakeholders.
          CSR (Carrol, 1979)
Firms have responsibilities to societies including economic, legal, ethical and discretionary (or philanthropic).

Philanthropy  to   CSR
THE 21ST CENTURY IS PROVING A BOOM TIME for philanthropy, social enterprise and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Two of the world’s richest men, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, are vying to give away their fortunes. Innovation is blossoming in clean-tech and socially minded businesses. And companies are increasingly boosting efforts in CSR as consumers demand more ethically sourced goods.

The former Microsoft chief executive is a prime example of a corporate hero who has left the business world in order to focus on his charity work. The hope is that he can foster the efficiency of the private sector in his foundation, which focuses on global health challenges.
Percy Barnevik, The former chairman and chief executive of Swiss-Swedish engineering group ABB, and former chairman of drugs giant AstraZeneca, has switched his focus from commercial interests to poverty relief. To run  Hand in Hand International, which extends small loans to poor women, including women in the  Indian state of Tamil Nadu
Television, the internet, foreign travel and issues like the tsunami and COVID 2019 have opened our minds to the fact that there are huge numbers of people who don’t have the capacity to live like people with privileges !

Satyamev Jayte

The wait is over...but had it not been for the 49 days of AAP rule , the matter (DTU-Faculty Recruitment Scam ) would have gathered enough dust for it to be  buried for ever. The case relates to a 2012 recruitment round at Delhi Technological University. Vacancies for various faculty positions were advertised in December 2011 and the selection took place in 2012. There were many irregularities and people who didn't fulfil even the minimum eligibility criteria were screened, allowed to appear for interview and even selected. When Ravindra San raised these issues he was constantly humiliated and harassed by the Administration. The irony is that these things are common in higher education field and the price that whistle blowers have to pay is so high that people are reluctant to wage a war against this form of corruption . This was a rather  lonely war that  Ravindra San had undertaken with support from a small section of the like minded teachers , yet he was always hopeful of victory of truth. In spite of the intervention of the then Lt.Governor Mr. Tejendra Khanna , he was not reinstated as Dean and HoD (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/education/news/DTU-told-to-reinstate-heads-of-departments/articleshow/17108058.cms ) . Judiciary refused to admit the case on some pretext or other.Even when Mr. Prashant Bhushan himself took up the case, Judge did not find it a fit case for examination. Then came the AAP government and files were reopened.Soon AAP Government resigned and all hopes were dashed but it had ordered for inquiry before it vacated office. Credit must  go to the present Lt.Governor Mr. Najeeb Jung who took action .Prof. Pankaj Jalote , Director IIIT Delhi has been given additional charge of Vice Chancellor  Delhi Technological University while the inquiry is conducted.
More on the irregularities  and the inquiry...

A Teacher's Dilemma ...

I always thought teaching was a noble profession...yet the events of the past few months are forcing me to wonder if that is true today. I read a letter written by a distinguished academician, Prof. K. L.Chopra, making an appeal to Shri. Tejendra Khanna, Ex. Chancellor of my University  (Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi ) to look into the alleged lack of grievance redressal mechanism, protection of  people with charges of plagiarism, irregularity in recruitments and many other issues, blaming the Vice Chancellor for the situation.Yet the same person chose to overlook similar charges against his good friend, Vice Chancellor of another University when students, faculty , Alumni and other staff raised voice of dissent towards policy decisions and the conduct  of his friend.

And then you have University of Delhi, supposedly a democratic institution that forces the faculty to follow Four Year UnderGraduate Programme without adequate process of consultation. The administration is not to be blamed completely though. The attitude of confrontation rather than academic dialogue and discussion  shown by DUTA can force anyone to follow the path of authoritarianism. I am not in the position to comment on the merit of the  move yet what baffles me most is that the even though the Vice Chancellor kept talking about abolishing the current three-year course from 2013 and initiating the four-year undergraduate programme, there wasn't  any voice of dissent.Suddenly there was an outpour of voices of opposition .One thing is sure though , the Four Year Programme got started as teachers' associations had lost their credibility and no one took them seriously. The step to appoint an Advisory Committee to look into the implementation of the four year programme is a welcome step. Let us welcome the new initiative as we enter a new academic year. Even so we need to reflect on a few issues.

There are a few fundamental courses in the Engineering / Technology domain such as workshop and Engineering Drawing .B Tech has been introduced but workshop is not developed. As if this was not enough Delhi University also has in its list of Programmes B Tech Humanities and B Tech Psychology. What will be the career path of the students who pass out with such Degree ? What would happen to the students who come with a three year Degree Programme seeking admission in Postgraduate Programmes in University of Delhi ?  Let us hope some good sense prevails and we do not make a mockery of academics in the name of experimentation and innovation !

Reflection Trail-1
I am back on reflection after a long break ..     .reflecting on the the unfolding of events in the year 2012 Significantly the year was marked by career progression and success in professional arena but equally traumatic on the personal sphere. The affairs of nation did nothing to assuage the feeling of despair rather added to the element of helplessness and gloom.

Where to begin the account ....the year began with the news of brother in law's sickness. Then there was Aman's tryst with a new place at Manipal . The realization that his heart was into something else and studying Engineering was perhaps a mistake came a bit too late. The worst part was that we did what a normal parent does...forcing him to rejoin B Tech  at Delhi again. I fear the worst but hope and pray for him to succeed. ..I was hopeful that I would be able to be with him and see to it that he develops interest in studies but as luck would have it...I got additional charge of Director -Development in the University ....left with hardly any time to pay attention to him.

My brother in law eventually gave up his fight and left us. A traumatic time for Ravindra San who was already dealing with his professional issues ...fighting against corruption in the recruitment process at Delhi Technological University (  http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-11-11/news/35048752_1_dtu-teachers-p-b-sharma-delhi-technological-university ). He was removed from the position of Head almost coinciding with beginning of my tenure as Director-Development.Watching his almost... lonely fight against the System , knocking at all pillars of our democracy without any success made me sad but his never say die attitude had to be backed by my support ( http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-11-06/news/34948102_1_dtu-hods-delhi-technological-university) . I tried my best to be his pillar of strength but failed most of the time. My fear and apprehensions were far stronger than conviction of truth that he is fighting for !

The question is why do we fail in practicing what we preach ? I have been counselling people on career choices, giving sermons on being supportive parents,  Why did I fail do be the example of a considerate mother then ? I supported Anna not because of the person he is but out of respect for the ideals he stood for  and in spite of that pleaded with Ravindra San to give up the fight and focus on the bare minimum duty that he gets paid for.; reinforcing that the fight against this system that is thriving on  connections, corruption , collusion and connivance is fruitless and a futile exercise...what does it reflect ? I have no answers....

Gandhi Jayanti , Independence and some Thoughts !

I may be wrong but I get a feel that Gandhi was less remembered this year on 2nd October as compared to the  previous times ! Wonder if it is a reflection of the fact that we are no longer apologetic about forgetting Gandhian values and embarking on a path of materialistic growth. Government too seems to have put him aside by announcing FDI in all possible fields. Swaraj, swabhimaan and self sufficiency , why these words sound so hollow ?

Let us take up another issue, what are our achievements as a nation ? Agreed GDP has grown, literacy is higher, poverty is lesser, more jobs are available, roads are flooded with cars, malls are buzzing with people, yet we are not happy ! Crime rate is higher, women is not safe, senior citizen are murdered brutally, children disappear like the air, everybody is getting more and more intolerant, hyper and insensitive to others' plight. Where have we gone wrong ?

We were known as a spiritual nation and materialism was considered a taboo but last thirty years have seen a gradual reversal of our value system. In the rat race to acquire wealth did we as a society sacrific family bond ? Possibly yes and this transformation whether for good or otherwise is seen in all strata of the society. It is seen that people migrate from villages to cities in search of greener pasture and end up without a job. If they are lucky and have a social net to help them , it is fine otherwise they are lured into crime .Today 'Ham Log' of Doordarshan is replaced by 24 hours of nonsense on cable television with crime, lust, treachery and such other themes dominating the programming content. Are we on the right track then ?

What about leadership ? Can we name any politician who can be a role model for this generation of youth ? Some names may crop up but  they are either media creations  or dynastic awataars. The hype and hoolsh surrounding them is artificially created and the charisma is short lived. Gandhiji, Shastriji , Nehru and Tagore are mere names that children mug up to clear the exams. Hanna Montana and Katrina ; Justin Bieber and Salman Khan ...these are some of the idols . What are the lessons that this generation can get from them ?
Sometimes I feel that I am being too cynical, critical and find fault with everything !!! What to do, these thoughts invariably cross my mind.

What do I do then ? Get annoyed, grumpy and moody ? Of course not , I watch Citizen Journalist, follow good stories on twitter, watch movies like Swadesh and Three Idiots .... and do my best to bring smile on other people's face. The biggest stress buster is my grand mother , who at 97 lives alone, manages to laugh and never lets negative thoughts overpower her...and when I think of her..Swaraj, swabhimaan and self sufficiency .......these words no longer sound  hollow ....
